Happy 8th Birthday, Facebook!

Today its Facebook’s 8th birthday. This is a happy occasion for Facebook, but much more significant to the Facebook team is the fact that over 850 million people around the world are using Facebook to connect with the people in their lives. Facebook was founded in 2004 to give people the tools to engage and understand the world around them.

In its initial days it was called “Thefacebook,” and it was originally located at thefacebook.com. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, together with his college roomies Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, Facebook was originally intended to be a network only for Harvard students, but was later expanded to other universities and finally to everyone.

I have been on Facebook for almost five years now and in that small time, Facebook has gone through some major milestones with Facebook Timeline and Timeline apps, Facebook Login, Facebook Social Plugins, Facebook Places, Facebook Deals and has launched the Open Graph API, a service that extends the Facebook Pages product across the web and much more.

We also predict that Facebook might launch something new, while celebrating the 8th birthday, Probably might be rolling out of layout re-design for Facebook Groups. (Similar to Facebook profile, the ability to add an image as a cover picture to welcome who visits the groups. – See image below.)

Facebook continues its rapid user acquisition and subsequent colonization of the internet. With 850 million users and counting. It celebrates its birthday week with the filing of an initial public offering (IPO), which could value the company at around $100 billion.
