The Hindu vs The Times of India – Comparative advertising

Few years before we had the Complan vs Horlicks, then came Tide vs Rin – comparative ads in India. Ultimately both the the ad spat ended up to the court. Now the viral trending on web is the The Hindu vs The Times of India – Comparative advertising.

The Times of India busted the first salvo against The Hindu in Chennai recently. The main objective was to create dissonance among the readers of The Hindu by portraying their brand choice as boring. Check out the advertisement below -

And so The Hindu also figured out the same chink in The Times of India’s armor and have produced enjoyable series of repartee that are already airing on television channels in the South, check them out below -

Now check out – How Hindu aimed at The Times but shot DNA

We all know that the young and ignorant reader of The Times of India are fed on the 5Fs—fun, frolic, froth, fashion, and fornication—-is clearly its target, The Hindu‘s TVCs seem like a direct assault on ads issued by The Times‘ competitor in Bombay, DNA, for its city supplement, After Hours, last year.

It would be interesting to see if the battle has few more chapters. Until then we would say, “Comparative advertising is – best, not factual and boring, but subtle and extremely clever!” Folks what do you think and whose side do you take? Do let us know by commenting down your opinions.
