Microsoft Buys Skype for $ 8.5 billion

Microsoft just announced its purchase of Skype, the internet telephone company. The transaction was valued at 8.5 billion dollars and was announced early on Tuesday. This was the largest acquisition made by Microsoft over its 36 year existence.

The value, though high, does not compromise the Microsoft . The $ 8.5 billion include the long-term debt of Skype , which is around 686 million dollars. Two years ago, the company had been valued at 2.5 billion dollars. Last year, the Skype balance closed with a loss of $ 7 million. The company was controlled by various investors, which included the founders of eBay and Skype , Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis. Besides Microsoft , the Skype was disputed by Google, Facebook, Cisco and others.

Analysts polled by news agency Reuters, in a scenario where the mobility offered by smartphones and tablets grasps increasingly larger slices of the market, Skype is the strategy to bring back the competitiveness of Microsoft in this field. Analysts say that Skype could bring online telephony features to Windows 7 Phone – operating system from Microsoft for mobile devices and thus intensify competition against IOS, Apple, and Google’s Android.

The Skype has gained notoriety for allowing users to communicate by voice and video for free, using a connection through the Internet. The option allows you to make calls billed software for mobile devices and phones for different countries, which generates huge savings in long distance and international calls.
