Toyota Fortuner Bookings Reopens
Toyota Kirloskar Motors (TKM) has once again reopened the bookings for Toyota Fortuner from January 1, 2011. TKM has stated that the current backlog of 3,000 Fortuner SUVs will be cleared in about 3 months.
Fortuner was launched in Aug 2009 and Toyota has since sold more than 18,000 units acquiring 57% market share in the mid-range SUV segment. TKM first closed bookings of the Fortuner in January 2010 and reopened bookings in August 2010, after bookings overwhelmed supply. TKM stopped taking orders in November 2010 for its Rs. 20 lakh SUV, again, because of a huge backlog of orders. Now, once again the company has reopened Fortuner bookings in January 2011.

Fortuner Anniversary Edition
Toyota launched the Anniversary Edition of Fortuner in August 2010. The special edition Fortuner commemorated the first anniversary of the SUV in India and was only be available in Pearl White color. Toyota said that only 250 Anniversary Edition Fortuners will be manufactured.
Fortuner Sales
Toyota Fortuner sales stood at 859 units in November and 1084 units in October last year. Fortuner sells more than double the number of other SUVs each month compared with all its immediate rivals combined, including the Mitsubishi Pajero and Ford Endeavour. After the launch of the Fortuner, sales of the Ford Endeavour and Honda CR-V were hit badly. To meet the high demand, the company had increased the production of the Fortuner to more than 950 units per month from the initial 500 units per month.
Toyota Fortuner vs Competition
There are two new rivals – Hyundai Santa Fe and BMW X1 that are worthy SUVs to snatch the Fortuner’s top spot. The newly launched X1 is a tough competition to Fortuner because, the on road price of Fortuner comes around 22 lakhs and with adding another lakh or two, one could opt for a BMW SUV. And BMW enjoys a premium brand image with its products boasting excellent performance, driving dynamics and premium equipments. We guess, reopening Fortuner bookings is an indication that Toyota is taking the competition more seriously than one would expect.
